Roundtable Talk – The legal status of artificial intelligence
With the cooperation of the National Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and the Algorithmic Constitutionalism Lendület Research Group, the Institute for Legal Studies launched a new event series in autumn 2025, titled:
Sustainable use of artificial intelligence in legal work
At the opening event, Deputy State Secretary Szabolcs Szolnoki and Research Professor Zsolt Ződi reviewed the latest developments regarding the national implementation of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act.
At the second event, we will discuss issues related to the legal personality and legal status of artificial intelligence. Considerable uncertainty surrounds the legal status of AI. The idea of granting AI legal personality equivalent to that of humans has already been raised; at the same time, numerous concerns have been voiced about AI becoming, in any form, a bearer of rights and obligations. One possible solution may be some form of limited legal personality. Several analogies can be considered in this respect—from legal persons to natural resources and the special legal status of animals. During the discussion, we will review these and similar ideas in an effort to move closer to the most appropriate approach.
Participants in the roundtable discussion:
- Szabolcs Korba, lawyer, economist
- Réka Pusztahelyi, Associate Professor, University of Miskolc
Moderator: Boldizsár Szentgáli-Tóth, Senior Research Fellow, Institute for Legal Studies
Date and time: Thursday, 27 November 2025, 10:00
Venue: Humán Tudományok Háza, Jogtudományi Intézet Tanácsterem
Participation is subject to prior registration via email at JTI.Titkarsag@tk.hu.
